2-Minute Best-Spotting Practice
Time needed: 2 minutes per person/interaction
Setting: Any interaction today
Purpose: Intentionally seeking positive qualities in others
Active Best-Finding (2 minutes)
What: During any conversation or observation of someone:
- Look for one specific strength they're demonstrating (even if small)
- Notice effort they're making, not just results
- Find something they're handling well, despite any struggles
- Observe a positive quality behind their behavior (e.g., their frustration might show they care deeply)
- Name it silently: "I see their [kindness/persistence/creativity/courage]"
Notice: How searching for positives shifts your attention, what emerges when you look for strengths, how this changes your energy toward them
Why: Rewires brain's negativity bias, improves relationships, creates positive interaction energy
Optional Sharing (if appropriate):
- "I noticed how [specific thing] you did"
- "I appreciate that you [specific effort/quality]"
- Keep it simple and genuine
Notice: How they respond to being seen positively, what happens to the dynamic between you
Why: Reinforces their positive qualities, builds connection, creates upward spiral
Tips:
- Start with people you find easier to appreciate
- Look for effort and character, not just outcomes
- Small recognitions count
- Trust what you genuinely notice
- Practice throughout the day
This single strategy can transform your entire day by shifting your lens from fault-finding to strength-spotting.
